Specialists differ from each other a little due to differences in the kinds of questions and problems which are the foci of their attention. Different kinds of specialists differ from each other only a little due to their transcendent concern with technique. Thus, the specialist who analyzes human problems is very much like the specialist who analyzes mechanical and electrical systems. Professional. specialization includes a socialization process which directs attention away from personal involvement in intimate personal relationships in a subjective way, and towards impersonal observation, analysis, and manipulation of things, people and groups in an objective way. The specialist is trained to maintain professional distance from the.objects of attention. Subjective involvement is unprofessional according to the traditional view. It would undermine the effectiveness of the specialist. Specialists who have differing foci of attention will not transcend specialization by learning how to direct their attention to new foci while maintaining their preoccupation with techniques. Liberation from their narrowness of perception will not come by the development of new technical skills in new areas of specialization. The person who specializes in a large number of areas does not thereby cease to be a specialist. To transcend specialization requires the transcendence of the preoccupation with techniques which characterizes specialization. This transcendence may best be facilitated by whole persons who are not preoccupied with techniques, even though competent in some useful techniques. They have the wisdom to use techniques only where they are appropriate, and to avoid the use of any technique in situations in which the use of any technique will cause suffering. By example such persons can help technocrats to transcend technocracy, provided the desire is already there to transcend technocracy. Specialists get in trouble primarily because of the exclusive nature of their interests and concerns. Their interests and concerns exclude others which are essential to being a whole person. It is not the nature of the interests and concerns which is destructive. It is the tendency towards exclusiveness which is destructive. Specialization is inherently an exclusive process.
