Out of concern for what may happen initiatives which are expressive-of-self are not taken. Often, through courage, paralyzing fear is transcended and appropriate action is taken even in the face of real dangers, and thereby the dangers are transcended. In other instances fear originates in imagined dangers which are less dangerous than the fear which they generate. It is often not obvious which dangers are real, and which are blown bigger than life by uninformed fear. Technocrats make use of the fear of the cowardly---as a means to manipulate them. By threat of physical, economic, psychological, or social violence---technocrats generate fear which inhibit initiatives which are expressive-of-self. Through such fear individuals violate their own integrity---in futile efforts to maintain their integrity. The self, out of fear, manipulates self in a self-defeating effort to avoid manipulations by others. Fear does not helpfully guide human behavior. Love casts out fear. Love creates the possibility of trust, and the hope that risks taken will bear sweet fruit, rather than bitter disappointment. In love people can be true to themselves, with courage transcend real dangers through appropriate action, and be free to see the difference between real dangers and imagined dangers. In love people can disarm technocrats who would manipulate real people until they are no longer real. Through love individuals may find fulfillment in community, without the use of fear to guarantee proper behavior. Individual integrity may be sustained. Technocrats who generate fear are most often themselves the victims of fears which drive them to violate their own integrity, and that of others. In a self-defeating way they fear even the love which might set them free from their fears. Love would undercut the rules by which they judge themselves to be successful, and others to be failures. Love would appear to undermine their security and so is feared. Through miracles even this fear is many times transcended. (c) 2003 by Paul A.
