There are many situations which can not be resolved by an individual working alone, because of the amount of work involved or because of the need for greater breadth of perception than most individuals can bring to a problem. Thus it is important that in our.childhood we develop self images of members of a team. Our educational program tends to focus on competitive individual accomplishments. Emphasis is placed on the ability of an individual to perform certain conventional tasks without outside sources of information or assistance. It is the individual who must pass the tests which are administered to measure the amount of learning which has occurred. It is the individual who must write up the laboratory report or the library research report. Because of the demands of grading practices it is necessary to have each individual try to perform the very same set of tasks and so provide a common basis of comparison among individuals and their learning accomplishments. Failures don't help. This framework tends to destroy team work in the academic setting. Often assignments are so stated that team work is equated to cheating, even though by restructuring the assignments learning might be improved by taking advantage of the student-student interactions which take place in a team work context. If educators more often made team work assignments, their students might become more informed about the variety of perceptions which differ-ing persons have of reality. By working with other students on a common task, students would come to appreciate the various contributions which persons of differing states of consciousness can make to the resolution of a problematic situation. The students could then profit from each other's perceptions (as well as from those of the instructor) and thus be prepared to approach new problems with a broader perspective than would be the case otherwise. Real scientists work in teams which themselves decide which new problems to tackle and how. To be able to do such work, students need to have corresponding experiences throughout their formal education. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
