As they become free to see and to accept instructors as potentially real persons all may downgrade playing games and seek to develop a fail-safe context in which dialogue and mutual understanding is possible. Through mutual evaluation all may assist in this way. A major contribution which students may make is the introduction of new questions and the revelation of unexamined assumptions. The uninhibited child is often more free to see new questions and unexamined assumptions than is the presumably wise adult. In a fail-safe context such a child will feel free to make such contributions to mutual liberal education. It is hard, however, for real students to refuse to cease to live in the face of invitations to enter into comfortable collusions which shut out the new questions which are pointing to realities which engender fear in the self. It is to fail to see the limitations of science and adopt a self-image as science- competent or science-incompetent. Idolatry has always been the presumably easy way out. The way out does not involve playing games with the nature of reality. Students may engage in helpful behavior as prophets by pointing to realities of death and birth. It would be helpful if real students were to join with attractive scientists in setting priorities so as to define realistic goals for science education. Technical solutions which uncritically accept all the unexamined assumptions of technocrats will not contribute to the reduction of alienation which might be an essential aspect of any effort to improve science education within a technocratic society. To identify realistic goals there must first be dialogue, mutual awareness, and a mutual willingness to learn strange languages. Value judgments must be made with a view to carry-over value and with respect for the developmental stages of participants. Institutions should be re-organized so as to make maximal use of the available educational resources in achieving realistic goals. It is not too much for students to expect instructors to engage in helpful behavior. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
