When structure is experienced as providing a fail-safe context of stability and opportunity, it is likely to be appreciated and tend to encourage the development of motivation. Love, power, and justice must be united in a structure which has integrity if the structure is to provide freedom to choose to real students. If there is power, but no love or justice, the structure will generate bureaucratic violence as its primary fruit. If there is love and power but no justice some will temporarily fare to their satisfaction while the poor suffer. If there is power and justice but no love, real persons will cease to live. What is essential is a structure which with integrity unites the three in human incarnations. The educational structure has focused heavily on verbal ensymbolments of truth. Because love is not limited to verbal channels of communication the educational system has often overlooked the essential roles which love plays in the lives of real students. Many of the professors within institutions of higher education have found the use of power in the outside world distasteful, and so have tended to avoid conscious participation in political action where power is exercised. Because professors have not had much experience with the humane use of power outside academia, they are not qualified to help their students lay the foundations for the humane use of power. Academia has traditionally been structured so that the power to make value judgments and participate in decisions and action has been power concentrated in administrators and faculty, with relatively little power exercised by students. The result that has followed as a natural consequence is that real students have not perceived justice in action, and leave colleges without a genuine appreciation of justice in action. When love, power and justice are equal participants in creating an educational structure --- then students through that structure find the freedom to see their own potentialities and the freedom to choose to fulfill them with personal integrity.
