To the analytic- objectivist it is objects in motion in space and time. To the spiritualist it is the eternal inter-play of spiritual presences. Neither has a set of criteria which transcend their own perspective so as to serve as an ultimate judge over the adequacy of others. The perspective from which a person is participating in reality is their present state of consciousness. A person in one state of consciousness may perceive an internal contradiction in the state of consciousness of an other, yet that contradiction not be real to the other. If the self be in a judgmental state of consciousness it is unlikely that the self will enter into dialogue genuine enough to reveal what is real to the other. It is not possible for the self and other to enter into a mutual understanding of reality until they have a mutual awareness of what is real to the self and other. Ensymbolment is an inadequate means to help the other to know what is real to the self in its state of consciousness. Ensymbolment manipulates self's experiences which are essentially private. Ensymbolment is self's effort to bring under full control (in a structured way) self's state of consciousness. Self's ensymbolment may be irrelevant to the other if the other seeks intimate relationships rather than full control. Pointing to realities may be helpful. We are creatures of the concepts and models which we choose to dominate our states of consciousness. The physicist whose dominant focus is upon mechanistic concepts and models will inevitably tend to see personal relations in a mechanistic manipulative frame of mind--- and seek ways of programming students as automatons. To escape possible enslavement of too narrow a perspective, physicists must consciously Leek to enrich their diet of states of consciousness by entering into more intimate relationships with real persons who choose to live in differing states of consciousness. Only by both considering and caring for these others can analysts escape from the enslavement of a mechanistic state of consciousness. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
