Some would understand the essential aspects of a person in terms of a vital force or soul which inhabits a particular body for a limited duration of time and then moves on to another domain, place, and/or time. To such persons the experience of souls as the essences of others is common; but there remains a mystery as to how to integrate that experience into an analytic under-standing of the nature of reality in which persons participate. Since such an analysis is not a matter of ultimate concern, such persons are free to live meaningful lives even though they don't always have full control of their destinies. The way which is essential to the achievement of meaningful lives remains one of the essential mysteries for technocrats. Some would understand the essential aspects of a person in terms of the physical forces which dominate within a particular body for a limited duration of time until the body no longer maintains its integrity and its parts then move apart to other places at later times. To such persons the experience of souls as the essence of others is rare, and there remains a mystery as to how to integrate the experience of parts into an analytic understanding of the nature of real persons who participate in reality. Since such a destructive analysis is a matter of ultimate concerns such persons are caught in a vicious feed-back loop which deprives them of hope and meaning even as they thoughtlessly gain full control of their destinies and so cease to live. The limitations of science pose some real problems to the future of the scientists. The pure analytic instinct knows no limitations, and seeks to take apart everything which is encountered---regardless of the natural consequences. It may be that this instinct is the result of a relatively recent mutation which will prove to have relatively little survival value. It may be, however, that in combination with other more primitive instincts the analytic instinct may be incarnate in attractive scientists who will in time prove to have a relatively high survival value. Rational analysis will not settle this question. Historical processes will settle the question, in the end. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
