Suffering is never regarded as good, and usually regarded as a sign of evil. All kinds of techniques are developed to eliminate suffering: medical programs, air conditioning in homes and cars, mechanical machines to do physical labor, mosquito repellents, aspirin, tranquilizers, other drugs, etc. Real sacrifice involves suffering. If all suffering is to be eliminated it is necessary to eliminate the need for sacrifice. Thus techniques are developed to reduce the need for sacrifice. We have taxes to pay for technical programs to care for our parents and grandparents. Specialists are hired to try to deal with the real problems of those who have such difficult real problems that they hurt others in their unsuccessful efforts to solve their real problems on their own. As a result our penitentiaries are full of persons who are in no way penitent, and who in practice form the faculties of crime schools for the young, whom the community sends to them with all expenses paid. It is not surprising that these things have come to pass. They are the natural consequences of a thoughtless internalization of the mythology of the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. With an emphasis on individual rights not counterbalanced in the mythology by an emphasis on individual responsibilities and the need for corporate participation, the system lacks integrity and generates persons who lack integrity and fragment institutions. In the scientific community many have come to feel that they have the right to grants, liberty, and research activities of their choice. The scientific mythology does not have any dominant focus upon a responsibility toward those who supply the funds which make research possible. The dedication is to abstract principles, not to real persons. Abstract principles do not talk back the way real persons do. Thus it is far more comfortable to be sincerely dedicated to abstract principles over which one has full control. Some things, such as happiness, can not be attained through direct pursuit. Such fulfillments are gifts which come to those who seek other than the fulfillments. The direct route is not viable. The way involves sacrifice and suffering for real persons. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
