Thus honesty demands that realistic goals be selected which students can achieve because the goals are appropriate to the students' developmental stages. It is hard to conceive how this can be done without professors knowing students through authentic meeting or without student involvement in making the value judgments which lead to the relevant decisions and action. The traditional foci of science education do not have inherent value apart from their incarnation. The incarnation of science fundamentals depends upon the initiative taken by students who are granted the freedom to choose under the creative guidance of attractive scientists. Real students are not automatons. They can not be programmed without respect for their emotional responses. Real learning does not take place without a sense of joy, satisfaction, fulfillment, hope and meaning. For science teachers to take an authoritarian stance and seek to maintain full control of what students will be expected to learn leads to the estrangement of real students and the stifling of creativity. Science teachers who play the parent role for students who are cast in the child role can not help students learn to behave as adults. The students are likely to continue to feel like impotent children who will age and re-play the parent roles which they watched their authoritarian teachers play. Unless students are encouraged to behave as adults they will not participate in decisions and actions which will help them incarnate the relevant fundamentals of science in a way which will be helpful when dealing with new problems which will confront them in their future.
