The technocratic trainer is constantly wishing for the honor which "good" students bring. The student who is not at hand, who can not be touched, is not real. The attractive scientist works with students who are at hand, who are real. A central element of many college science improvement programs has been the assumption that better raw material, better students, should be attracted to the sponsoring institution. Rarely has anybody pointed to realities present in the fact that there are not enough "good" students of appropriate school age to satisfy the fond desires of all science teachers for "good" students. Students who come to a science teacher as good students are a scarce resource. Such students tend to be concentrated in a few very exclusive institutions. Any inventory of how many "good" students there are in the nation---will quickly show that it is insane for all educational institutions to seek their fulfillment in gathering together on their campuses more than their own reasonable portion of all the available "good" students. An institution's real fulfillment may be found through being helpful to the real students who are at hand, not through the clever development of techniques to attract to the institution a disproportionate share of the nation's already "good" students. The latter procedure is neither helpful nor sane. Insanity is a term which characterizes the relationship between alienated persons and others with whom they associate. There are no clean boundaries between sanity and insanity. There is a continuum associated with varying degrees of the presence (or absence) of mutual awareness, mutual understanding, authentic meeting, intimate relationships, dialogue, and reciprocal perspectives. Society is endangered to the extent that the relationship between scientists and others is similar to the relationship between insane persons and others. Most insane persons are not free to participate in political action. Scientists acting professionally as scientists are engaged in political action --- in that their action directs the use of significant portions of the public's scarce resources. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
