They maintain their integrity without undermining the integrity of others. They contribute to the integrity of the community and help it overcome the fragmenting forces within the sociological processes. Real persons are not automatons which have been programed to a high level of sophistication. Real persons are known within authentic meetings. They speak the primary word 'I-Thou' and are not reduced to 'It' by those who speak only the primary word 'I-It'. In a technocratic society which is dominated by techniques it is not common to meet real authentic persons. They do not use techniques to get their way. They live their way, and so offer an incarnation which is alternative to those who have become sickened by techniques without insight. Real persons suffer under bureaucratic violence but do not counterattack with violent techniques to avoid such suffering. They seek other ways. Real persons do not have a vision of utopia advanced technology. They do not place great hope in an improved GNP with its associated GNWaste. Real persons are not in a rush to pack more activities into their past, because they find their hope and meaning within dialogue in the eternal now. Those who regard themselves as intelligent and sophisticated are likely to regard real persons as simple, like children. Such naivete is regarded as inadequate to the demands of the technocratic society with its strong emphasis on competition and a high level of technical competence. Technocrats feel that to survive and lead a comfortable life---one must give up childlike ways and become realistic. One must acquire certain essential things. One's ultimate concern must be to get ahead through the use of controlling techniques. Those who cease to live within the technocratic state of consciousness lose sight of the contexts within which humans find hope and meaning---and so they destroy the contexts within which they might find hope and meaning. Because of the essential uncertainties of life, their analysis over-looks the importance of truths and commitments which are incarnate in wise persons. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
