The program is supposed to liberate a student from the narrowness of his or her family and community context. Through a liberal education a student should learn to respond wisely to a wide variety of situations with flexibility and creativity. One might expect to find on the staff of liberal arts colleges adults who were themselves liberally educated and who have proven their liberal education through helpful involvement in a number of different types of life contexts. The expectation is often not fulfilled. In many instances liberal arts colleges are populated by professors who have proven their ability to survive only within the context of the academic institutions. It is the exception, rather than the rule, that college professors have had even a few years experience working full time outside the academic institution. Even within the academic institution there is a general tendency for the flow of adults to be from the higher levels of specialization towards instructional situations which call for lower levels of specialization and much integration of knowledge and skills. The direction of flow of humans carries with it the value judgments of which those humans are the incarnation. The result is that the university value systems and value judgments flow into elementary schools, but the gut level awareness of the needs of real students in elementary schools does not in a corresponding way flow into the university. Similar statements might be made regarding perceptions of real life situations in industry, government, homes, and general community affairs. The academic institution which presumes to train young people to make creative contributions in these areas---often has no strong feed-back loop to insure validation (or modification) of its program. When a study of the program is undertaken, it is almost always experts from within the academic institution who are called as consultants. It is the blind leading the blind, and not too surprisingly they are not free to see their blindness because of collusions and unexamined assumptions. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
