To others, it is to be achieved by the possession of adequate things, information understanding, techniques, resources, etc. Others seek to achieve liberation through inattention to the reality of human finitude; via collusion they for a time cause the nature of reality to be other than it is---and so they initiate the process by which they cease to live. Those who attempt to deal with finitude through denial cease to live and merely metabolize. Liberal arts colleges have presumed to assist in the liberation of the youth they ostensibly serve. Yet, as participants in the human condition those who make the determinative political decisions in liberal arts colleges make the error of encouraging liberation through the use of techniques which seek to transcend human finitude through the manipulation of objects, relationships, self- images, ensymbolments, and transcendent insights. In recognition of human finitude techniques are developed to which they can not acknowledge honestly. The professors have been trained in universities dedicated to the transcendence of human finitude through the accumulation of knowledge and techniques of manipulation. Thus the professors are not free to deal honestly with finitude, and so participate in self-defeating techniques to deny its reality in the lives of real students. Liberal arts colleges whose professors can not honestly deal with their own finitude are impotent institutions. They can not liberate their students. If they are to be helpful to their creaturely students, they must first honestly acknowledge their own creaturely nature, and accept the liberation which comes to those who accept the nature of reality and honestly describe it in humanistic, scientific, and prophetic dialogue. Once finitude is accepted, there may be a dedication to openness and the beginning of mutual awareness by self and other of each other and of reality, leading to a mutual understanding of self and other within the context of finitude. This way begins a liberation from debilitating collusions which enslave finite creatures. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
