They do not experience the fulfillment which self and others explicitly and/or implicitly anticipated to find within the activity. Upon examination it may become apparent that the activity is in reality an orgy in its essential characteristics, if not in the traditional narrow sense. Those who are indifferent and bored may have become tired of the arrogance of the situation which continues without mutual awareness of that arrogance; or they may, as pupils of the initiators of the orgy, have failed to join in as full participants in the collusions which facilitate the orgy. Often in the face of such indifference and boredom the technocrats who are participants in the orgy will become motivated to develop more sophisticated techniques in keeping with their unexamined assumptions, to fulfill the complex possibilities of the situation---hoping thereby to transcend the decline in motivation of the participants. Certain efforts will not transcend uncertainty. The grounds for the uncertainty must be examined before the uncertainty can lead to insight. In such situations certainty will only perpetuate the collusions which obscure the grounds for uncertainty. When there is indifference and boredom---the participants in those states of consciousness need to reach out to others who are not participants in those states of consciousness. They need to seek opportunities for authentic meeting---so that they may be touched by possibilities which by collusion have been excluded from previous consideration and caring. Those who are the victims of indifference and boredom can not be helped via the techniques of full control and the maintenance of standards. The imposition of additional expectations, whether internalized or not, will not liberate the victims of indifference and boredom. Invitations into dialogue and dedication to openness are far more likely to be helpful to those who experience dilemmas of indifference and boredom. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
