This-situation tends to focus the the students' attention on learning only those things which can be "tested" in the traditional way. Students are implicitly encouraged to accept the value judgments of the instructor with respect to: personal background and style of attention by the student; and irrespective of individual differences between students with respect to personal background, style of learning, perspectives on life, expected future relevancies, etc. In the end the student tends to degenerate into trying to out-guess the instructor as to what questions will be on the final exam. Some authors and publishers find it profitable to aid students in this guessing game by publishing handbooks on how to pass standardized tests. What do students really learn in the end? The traditional testing method tends to focus concern on what the student may not have learned. If the student can be caught not having mastered certain response patterns, then he/she is judged to have failed in the educational venture. It might be worth considering the possibilities of developing educational assessment which would focus the attention of both the student and the instructor on students' positive accomplishments. This might be done by asking the student to make declarations of competencies which are valued by the student---in light of goals accepted jointly by the student and instructor at the beginning of a course as appropriate to the student's needs. The instructor's role would then be to determine to what extent the declaration of the student regarding positive accomplishments is an accurate declaration. In this way the student would be given positive, rather than negative motivational perspectives, and the whole learning process might be facilitated rather than debilitated as it is by traditional testing methods.
