A few of these institutions maintain religious affiliations of differing degrees and characters. One of the aspects of such institutions pertains to the degree to which the institution seeks to maintain certain religious doctrines and/or codes of conduct. The tension between an unrestricted seeking after truth with complete honesty on the one hand, and the commitment to maintain certain religious doctrines and/or codes of conduct on the other- --is a tension which in most cases leads to reduced commitment to the ensymbolments known as doctrines and codes. Regrettably the reduced commitment has not been paralleled in each case with a compensating increased commitment to be helpful to students. Too often the increased commitment has been to considerations other than real persons; e.g., personal professional advancement, the information explosion, the narrow discipline, or maintaining standards of academic purity and excellence. There would be new hope and meaning were liberal arts colleges to rededicate themselves in a radical way to being helpful to their real students---in keeping with the roots of their tradition, and the early days of their growth. Such institutions need to follow their avowed leader in breaking with compulsive concern for the letter of the law and policies, and regain a sensitivity to the spirit. Without a familiarity with the spirit, great care in following and enforcing the letter of the law of academic policies will be to no good end. Science concerns itself with telling it like it is about physical, chemical, and biological processes which yield to objective analysis and ensymbolments. Prophets concern themselves with telling it like it is about human relationships, and the natural consequences of human decisions and actions. Technocrats have a compulsive inclination to convert such descriptions into prescriptions and proscriptions for manipulation of things and people---to fulfill trends which are without hope and meaning. When technocrats dominate the political actions within liberal arts colleges, they cease to liberate real students---and cut such colleges off from their roots. The natural consequences should be obvious to those who have been liberated and are truly free to see the nature of reality. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
