Such is the dominant focus of information theory. Consider, on the other hand, human experience and various states of consciousness and the ways in which humans influence each other's states of consciousness. The channels of communication which play important roles are quite varied. Most persons are aware of and consciously use written and spoken words, and perhaps hand gestures. Not so many people would be inclined to at the same time consider body language, body contacts, tone of voice, eye contact, facial expressions, posturing, contexts of expressions, odors, absences of expressions expected, etc. Human motivations, however, are affected as much by non-verbal communication as by verbal communication. Decisions and actions are a major means of communication. Consider: use of time, selected priorities, ways of setting priorities, use of scarce resources, foci of attention, and unexamined assumptions; they all communicate to associates some messages whose power exceeds that of most verbal messages. If there are among them disparate messages---they are a sign of a lack of integrity and an invitation to play dishonest games. It is the total communication which is effective. Hidden messages may dominate. The teacher who gives unending assignments downgrades the importance of meditation and time to think. An inflexible course structure tells students that their desires and unique concerns are unimportant. The compulsive researcher communicates a disinterest in real students. The systematic avoidance of sacrifice and suffering communicates a selfish nature inclined to dependence upon techniques. The attractive scientist will work with real students as an adult; and with respect for their emotional responses will seek to facilitate the decisions of students in such a way that they will be free to accept new questions and insights which will be the basis for later helpful political action to solve real persons problems. By being an incarnation with integrity, the attractive scientist's total communication can be integrative with power to help students become liberated through a liberal education. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
