If it does so, it will go a long way towards helping students become free to accept and appropriately use the knowledge and methods of science to ask appropriate new questions (perhaps directed at technocrats) as a means to engaging in informed and wise decisions and action. Such benefits are impossible so long as real students avoid science courses, or become alienated within science courses. They can not become free to accept the questions and answers of the instructors---so long as the instructors are not free to accept and take seriously the questions and answers of real students. Only through mutual consideration and caring can there be open and honest dialogue, and so mutual understanding of the nature of reality. It is not enough that there be a mutual understanding of the theoretical nature of reality. For carry-over value to be real, the nature of reality must become known through the process of making and acting on decisions which are perceived by the student as significant to the students' future life. It is not enough for the authoritarian scientist to know of uses for the content he selected. The manner in which setting priorities for the course takes place---can be determinative in setting the emotional response context in which the student learns; or plays games. That emotional response context is in turn determinative with respect to how strongly the student will be motivated to reconsider and perhaps use the content which was learned. Thus the carry-over value is strongly dependent upon the students' emotional responses within the learning experience. Insensitive and/or dominant teachers are likely to participate in a collusion to the effect that students are responsible for their own negative emotional responses, and that emotional responses should not be a matter of concern to teachers. The attractive scientist will in dialogue with students who are seeking ways of being helpful in refining the students' common sense---so as to increase students' self-esteem through successful and emotionally pleasant learning experiences. Students can develop a self-image of self as being science-competent, and so not become the victims of technocrats serving as the high priests of an authoritarian science; offering false prophecy to the effect that their techniques are the means to salvation.
