If they acquiesce to his choice of questions and answers, they may do so only by partial or total suppression of their own personal curiosity and genuinely personal responses to questions. If they are to spend their limited time in concern for the teacher's questions and answers---then they will not have time for their own questions and answers. Time is the most precious resource a person has. It is difficult to spend time on something without generating a conviction that that for which their time is spent is valuable. Students can not spend time on a teacher's questions and answers-- -rather than on self's questions and answers---without a conviction that the teacher's are questions and answers more important than their own. But this is to sell their souls for the impotent rewards offered by the teacher, rewards whose value perishes in but a few years. Shall one sell one's soul for such perishable rewards, while entering into a collusion to the effect that the rewards are of enduring value? On the other hand: If one does not acquiesce to the teacher's choice of questions and answers, one may preserve one's soul, but be in doubt about one's future ability to sustain one's body. Our society has arranged to treat as very important (for a few years) the teacher's rewards to students for conformity to teacher's value perceptions. The best grades are awarded to the students who treat teacher's questions and answers as important. Students may acquire good grades, while losing souls. In such a situation the student cant' win. At least there are extremely few students who can transcend the personal violence to body and soul which is built into the situation. There is only one wise thing to do with respect to such situations; try to avoid them if at all possible. Might it be that in their simplicity young students are wiser than the science teachers whom they try to avoid? Might it be that they fear loss of personal integrity in science training? Might they fear that the price to be paid for science training is the separation of body and soul? Might students be taking careful note of the sub-humane nature of many scientifically trained technocrats in areas of military technology and in their building an inhumane technocratic society?
