Scientists and non-scientists often find it difficult, if not impossible, to communicate fully with each other and so exist in a state of alienation. They tend to live in different states of consciousness. The alienation originates in and tends to accentuate their differing states of consciousness. A feed-back loop process continues to accentuate alienation until through a miracle it becomes possible for each self to accept others in their differences and their integrity. When there exist closed groups---there is a tendency for communication between closed groups to be delegated to specialists who are expected to serve as emissaries carrying information between groups. Such specialists will serve to reduce the alienation between the groups only to the extent to which they facilitate additional communication between typical members of the differing groups. If typical members consider inter-group communication to be the exclusive responsibility of the selected emissaries, then alienation and misunderstanding will most likely continue. There is a growing awareness among scientists that they need to send emissaries out among non-scientists; lest the non-scientists, through citizen power, take political action to reduce science taxes. Yet, if those emissaries do not facilitate broader dialogue between scientists and non-scientists the alienation will not be reduced. This will certainly be the case so long as typical leading scientists regard such emissaries with condescension, as has often been the case in recent history. Too often members of closed groups can perceive only what members of other closed groups might learn from self's closed group. Rarely is there a reciprocal perception. Too infrequently do scientists perceive that there is much of importance with they might learn from non-scientists---so as to become more effective as scientists. As scientists learn from non-scientists the non-scientists may become more open to learning from scientists---thus reducing alienation. In this way science courses may come to have greater carry-over value to non-scientists, helping them engage in constructive and wise political action. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
