Society expects the educational process to help students fit into society as contributing members of society. This is an acculturation process. The students must be trained to fit in. They must accept most of the unexamined assumptions of the society, or they can not fit in. They must not ask too many new questions, or they will undermine the collusions which hold the society together. They must not take too much initiative, or they will try new ways which are taboo. Through acculturation education helps students to adapt the realities of life. Education in its pure form tends to foment revolution and to undermine the traditional techniques of full control in a society. Education tends to stimulate the introduction of new elements into the society. Students are encouraged to ask new questions, to take initiative, and to examine traditionally unexamined assumptions of the society. Through education students are prepared to help society transcend its real problems and dilemmas which originate in some of the perverted structural elements which society seeks to preserve. Through training students may learn the techniques necessary to maintain a technocratic society. The training may involve skills of high degrees of complexity. The training may involve intellectual analysis of high degrees of abstraction. In all, however, the dominant focus is upon techniques to accomplish unquestioned goals. Training does not include consideration of the ultimate questions which confront men and women. If such questions are the subject of training, it is in an authoritarian context where questions are not examined as students become programmed to give correct answers, or even programmed to manipulate old ideas without perceiving implications in new combinations of old ideas. Training and acculturation go well together. Within training programs of high levels of technical complexity it is possible to communicate (via hidden channels of communication many accultrating messages about the nature of reality. In this way the mythological context which generates the technocratic society is maintained and creative minds directed into diversionary research--- so that they will not participate in creative political action.
