Technocrats see no good reasons, or need, for balanced/mutual considerations with other people as whole beings --- within complex patterns of healthy personal and communal relationships. Simple minded dominance is the central concept in the lives of technocrats; not anything so complicated as balance, mutuality, cooperation or honest dialogue. Technocrats see no problem with the tragedies which flow from excommunications, alienations and broken- dialogue. Listening carefully to different people is not part of the life-styles of technocrats or of their devoted disciples. Technocrats are NOT likely to give much, if any, consideration to the tragic human costs of their domineering/alienative life-styles. They see such costs as irrelevant; i.e., as not worthy of proper technical considerations or adjustments in their existing plans, attitudes or assumptions. They are not about to change their domineering/alienative life-styles because of anything so irrelevant to them as alienation. Relatively early in my growing awareness of the life -styles of "technocrats" I tended to criticize physicists, my own kind, to be on the safe side. Repeatedly other scholars would comment, yes, but what you are talking about is not limited to just physicists. Such comments came from people who had focused upon literature, music, art, politics, medicine, etc. Once when I had the opportunity I approached a world famous ballet dancer who had just made a presentation to a college audience and was available afterward for conversation. With only a minimal explanation of what I meant by "technocrat" I asked if "technocrats" were present among ballet dancers. Instantly he motioned to those near to him to move away, as he wanted to give a demonstration. He did a "grand" pirouette; and commented, "Technically perfect, but with no emotion". Technocrats can be found among musicians, artists, theologians, religious leaders, poets, teachers, ethicists, mediators, etc. No human discipline is immune to the dis-ease of technocrats; not even the discipline of seeking to transcend specialized human disciplines! While there may be a significant correlation between people who are "technocratic" and people who are "domineering"; it is not safe to assume that the correlation is quite high. We need to discern what kind of person each individual is by observing their patterns of behaviors; and then respond to their own patterns of behaviors, not to a label which we or anybody else has pasted on them.
