They must dramatically convince us in our own terms --- that they are profoundly different from the people who led us to be suspicious, fearful and defensive --- and so are worthy of reverence, honor and trust. If they unilaterally demand that we trust them on their own terms --- they do not qualify to be our liberators! Many religious leaders who are seeking converts to their pattern of religious beliefs and behaviors --- need to understand the above basic facts of life. A would be liberator who demonstrates any significant portion of the pattern of suspicious, fearful and/or defensive behaviors (which led us to be like them in alienation, estrangement and excommunications) --- thereby disqualifies themselves from being able to be our: savior, liberator, redeemer, healer, servant, etc. Any would-be-liberator who uses key religious words in a pattern similar to that used by those who enslaved us --- cannot qualify to be our liberators from our enslavement --- no matter how hard they try, or what price they pay.
