The purely capitalistic system does NOT explicitly encourage extended families to take care of their own --- as is the case in tribal communities, or in communist and socialist states and communes. In a purely capitalistic system the focus is upon the individuals' rights to be unique individuals, creative, and provide manufactured products and services at competitive prices. There are no explicit provisions in the HEART of the purely capitalistic system for taking care of people who are: sick, weak, disabled, victimized, mentally ill, mis-guided, etc. Such services create the risk of undermining the motivations of individuals to work, take care of themselves and accumulate wealth --- to live off of when they as individuals may be sick, weak, disabled, victimized, mentally ill, mis-guided, etc. The purely capitalistic system has had patches overlayed upon it --- to deal with some of its inadequacies; but it has not successfully dealt with the issues of raw greed, covetousness, concentrations of power, domination, preoccupations with achieving control/invulnerability; and what to do about individuals who are victims of mental illness, other communicable diseases, and tragedies. Mental illness is usually not engendered by bacteria, molds, virus, protozoa and prions --- as are most physiological dis-eases. However, mentally ill people do rob other people of the freedom to be at-ease; and so may cause others who are pre-disposed to mental illnesses to become mentally dis-eased. If each person is alone responsible for taking care of themselves --- what is society to do with mentally ill people who fail to take care of themselves? Put them in prison? Put them on the streets? Let them become criminals on their own through enlightened self-interest? Spread diseases to healthy people? Provide under-staffed & under-funded mental wards for them? Make use of selective euthanasia? Are people to be valued for how well they fulfill the expectations of the pure capitalistic system? Consider carefully the likely long-term- consequences of implicitly saying "yes" the last question! How will world-wide-communities respond to the threats posed against global integrity by the consequences of implicitly saying "yes" to the last question? (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
