Much depends upon the way in which we confront them. To be creative, helpful and healing as we CONFRONT them we need to remember the following helpful elements of graceful ways to CONFRONT them. Herein the word "CONFRONT" will be used to suggest the following elements of such graceful CONFRONTATIONS: RECOGNIZE: Means not being blind to the presence and nature of "The Domination System" as a whole --- or to the presence and nature of supporters of "The Domination System". Let those who have eyes to see, see with understanding. Let those who have ears to hear, hear with understanding. RECOGNITION often entails transcending collusions. NAME: Means that we need to develop and/or make use of words, phrases, symbols, stories and signs to point to and make reference to that which we have RECOGNIZED as confronting us; which we need to confront in ways which are creative, helpful and healing. DESCRIBE: Means that we make clear what each NAME points/refers to. DESCRIPTIONS often entail comments about the contexts within which we have seen, heard or otherwise experienced that to which a NAME refers. Often we get into trouble when we use NAMES which are vague, confused, and of doubtful meaning. TALK ABOUT: Means being willing to transcend repressive taboos and collusions which inhibit informed communications about "things" which threaten our personal and communal integrities; e.g., religion, politics and our human limitations, imperfections, self-righteousness, arrogance and pretentious sexuality. DIALOGUE-LISTENING: Means going beyond merely sending out messages about what concerns us --- and listening actively to messages which others are offering to us. FACE-CONFRONT: Means not running away from or ignoring that which confronts us and threatens our personal and communal integrities. TRANSCEND-SUBVERT: Means escaping from the imprisoning assumptions, attitudes, rules, laws, proscriptions, prescriptions and taboos which supporters of "The Domination System" seek to impose upon us and enforce --- and responding in ways which deprive them of their false: powers, respectability, honors, and support bases. RECONCILE: Means seeking to restore open and honest communications between us and the supporters of "The Domination System" by dealing with them in NON-VIOLENT ways. NON-VIOLENT: Means avoiding as much as possible engaging in: coercion, violence, attacks, ridicule, contentiousness, dishonesty, secrecy, addictions, and collusions --- for engaging each of them entails some form of violence and alienation. CONFLICT-RESOLUTION: Means GETTING TO YES with those who confront us and disagree with us; i.e., bringing out into the open the root-conflicts between us in regards to our apparently mutually exclusive ideals, values, principles, goals, etc. --- and finding ways to see that much of what we affirm is complementary; rather than contradictory. COOPERATION: Means finding ways of working together toward mutual advantages which cannot be enjoyed in the absence of working together. It entails recognizing that many ways of being in confrontations are LOSE-LOSE ways; and that there are other alternative ways of being together which are WIN-WIN ways of working cooperatively toward mutual advantages which are otherwise impossible to enjoy. Helpful CONFRONTATIONS entail most, if not all, of the above elements. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
