Defensiveness --- seeking always to be ready to ward off threats and attacks. Each action is taken with an intent to be ready to defend the action. 2. Appearances --- seeking always to manage appearances so as to maintain control of the situation. There is a keen sense of how one wants or needs to appear; and each action is taken to conform appearances to wants and/or needs. 3. Offensiveness --- seeking to keep other in defensive postures, so as to maintain control over their patterns of behavior and/or life-styles. 4. Conformity --- in terms of some normative set of commands, laws, rules, regulations, standards, etc. Personal behaviors and life styles are to be governed so as to be in proper conformity to what is good, approved, and/or respected. 5. Authenticity --- in fulfilling unique personal potentials for participation in hope within honest personal relationships which are characterized by both personal and communal integrity. Participants cooperate in efforts to be true to self and others in authentic communities, communications, and communions --- minimizing defensiveness, deceptions, offensiveness, and conformity. Most of us move back and forth between a number of patterns of behaviors. Some of us may get stuck in one pattern of behavior which dominates most of our waking moments. Often we and others are confused about our motivations toward whatever pattern of behavior we engage in. Some of us are very intentional, even though confused. Others of us are intuitive in creative ways --- which we cannot rationalize according to any coherent pattern of logic or reason. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
