If we act as if we have excessive authority, power, responsibility and/or needs --- then our thoughts, attitudes, emotions and behaviors are likely to be unbalanced, dishonest and disintegrative of persons and communities. Presumptions of excessive authority, power and/or responsibility are likely to lead to arrogance, pretentions, self-righteousness, and busy-body work. Workaholics, volunteer people-managers, judgementalists, legalists, busy-bodies, power-corrupt people and their like are likely to make such presumptions. Presumptions of excessive needs may lead to hording, dependency, demanding personalities, conspicuous consumption, etc. Case B It is also important to recognize the authority, power, responsibilities and needs which ARE IN FACT ours --- whatever their extent may be. If we act as if we have less than is the case --- we are again likely to be unbalanced, dishonest and disintegrative of persons and communities; but in different ways than in the above case. We may seek to pretend that we have less authority, power and responsibilities than we have --- to evade our responsibilities. Such pretense is not the foundation for wise and prudent assumptions, attitudes, thinking or behaviors. We may seek to pretend that we have less needs than we have --- in dishonest efforts to pretend that we are not as inter-dependent and/or not as dependent as we really are. Such pretense is not the foundation for wise and prudent assumptions, attitudes, thinking or behaviors. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in Download it!
