In physiological diseases the agents which cause the disease are tiny micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses, molds and prions whose presence within the diseased organism upsets the integrative functioning of the larger organism. In the instance of non-objective diseases such as addiction and codependence it is non- objective agents which occasion the disease; e.g., non- objective agents such as disintegrative/dysfunctional: IDEAS IDEALS VALUES ATTITUDES INJUNCTIONS COMMANDMENTS JUDGEMENTS CONDEMNATIONS REJECTIONS To deal effectively with diseases such as addiction and codependence it is necessary to develop responses which depend upon clear recognition of the threats posed by the various non-objective agents such as those suggested above. It is essential that the recognition process be accurate and properly discriminate between the disintegrative/dysfunctional agents on the one hand and other similar agents which are integrative/functional; e.g., non-objective agents such as: TRUTH HONESTY LOVE RECONCILIATION FORGIVENESS AUTHENTICITY RESPONSIVENESS OPENNESS SIMPLICITY The challenge is in making the discrimination between the integrative/functional agents and others which seek to appear to be integrative/functional to circumvent the healthy response to their presence. The disintegrative/ dysfunctional agents use deception/dishonesty as a means to achieve their purpose which entails the disintegration of their "host"---without the invitation of the "host". This is similar to the ways of physiological disease agents. Effective responses are likely to be similar in some ways to the pattern of responses of the physiological immune system.
