Such religious leaders were proud of their religious perfections and regarded them as keys to their own salvation. Jesus did not share in the preoccupations of the religious leaders of his day and province of Rome. He was not so up tight about details of laws and commandments--- and was far more concerned with matters of the heart and with personal and communal integrity. Jesus severely offended the religious leaders of his day and province of Rome, and also appeared to be a threat to the authority of Rome---so the religious leaders of his day and province of Rome encouraged the governmental leaders to crucify the nonconformist who did not show proper respect for religious law. They hoped to be rid of him and all the nonconformity that he represented. History shows that the hopes of the religious leaders and the Roman governmental officials were not soon fulfilled. However, in most times and provinces there are religious leaders who are preoccupied with the perfection of religious laws, rules, regulations, prescriptions, commandments, proscriptions, and judgements. Such religious leaders are usually proud of their religious perfections and regarded them as keys to their own salvation. Many such religious leaders even presume to be disciples of the nonconformist from Nazareth, even though they share more in common with the religious leaders who led the Roman governmental authorities to crucify Jesus. So there is a sense in which the hopes of those ancient religious leaders and Roman authorities are being fulfilled in many times and provinces of the modern world. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
