Salvation is not an achievement. Salvation is not dependent upon any kind of conformity or non-conformity. Salvation is not a product which can be marketed, sold, bought, or paid for through the exchange of any kind of valuables. Salvation is not a status which can be conferred upon us by any person or group---independent of our decisions and actions. Salvation is not something which we get when we have met some set of prerequisites to salvation. Salvation is not a condition of an individual as an individual; but pertains rather to the quality of relationships among healthy members of a healthy community. Salvation relates to the personal and communal integrity of members of a community of people who are free to know each other openly and honestly within intimate relationships where vulnerability and true security are intimately related to each other, going hand in hand with each other. Salvation is known through mutual gifts of security freely given and freely received apart from preconditions, expectations, and requirements. People who know and enjoy salvation freely accept each other and others into open and honest dialogue without respect for preconditions, expectations or requirements. The way of salvation is not the way to salvation as a destination which can be reached, achieved, earned, owned, controlled, or possessed. The way of salvation is an integrative way of personal and communal life; not a condition of being an individual person. People who know and enjoy the way of salvation are truly humble. They do not regard themselves as being: in charge, in control, arbitrators of ultimate values or ideals, qualified to pass judgements and/or to condemn anybody, perfected, superior, or better than others. Salvation is not a superior status or condition which makes some people better in any way than other people who lack the superior status. Often we cannot enjoy salvation which is present to us because we refuse to accept salvation on its own terms; seeking instead to get it on our own terms. When we accept salvation on its own terms we know God as well as we can. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
