If what can be done to make a difference in a given situation is limited to technical responses; then other persons who have the necessary technical tools, skills, knowledge, disposition, and resources which we think we do not have---can do for us what needs to be done to make the needed difference in regards to our personal problems and dilemmas; and we can be impotent without any sense of responsibility to make the needed difference in our own selves. The above perception of how things are---is central to the lives of addicts and codependents, their relationships, and their identities. Their games of mutual self manipulation/deception grow out of their perceptions, beliefs and attitudes that the only way to make a difference is through indiscriminate technical responses to both problems and dilemmas; technical responses which are dependent upon available resources and the power to be in control. Thus, such people are preoccupied with ownership, possessions, money, consumption, food, drugs, gadgets, technology, work, manipulations, understanding, prediction and control. They have addictive/codependent personalities. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
