Yet, we are bound to repeatedly encounter reminders of our past failures if we put off doing what we intend to do, or put off what others reasonably expect us to do. The mess that we do not clean up will constantly be in the way, and remind us that we have not cleaned it up. The unfinished job or unfulfilled promise will repeatedly come to our attention, and be an occasion for depression until we do something about it. We can avoid such reminders of past failures by: 1. Actually doing the job and putting it behind us. It will probably take less energy and involve less pain to do it, than to constantly be confronted with the fact we have failed again to do it in a timely way as intended/expected. 2. Acknowledging that we cannot do the job, or do not have enough time to do all that we intended to do and/or that others expect us to do. Then we must restructure our expectations and other people's expectations more honestly. 3. Avoiding generating intentions/expectations which we are unlikely to really fulfill. This can be done by wise budgeting of time, energy, money, resources. We may need to deal with other people's unwise expectations; but putting off doing that is just another form of not honestly dealing with our situations, limitations, intentions, etc. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
