     Each  community  conceives itself in terms of how  it
defines  its  members'  possible grounds for self  esteem.
Whether   or  not  members  enjoy  personal  and  communal
integrity  depends upon whether or not the  definition  of
possible   grounds  for  self  esteem  entail   integrity:
conformity   to  coercive  expectations,   achievement  of
control,  achievement of some form of perfection,  winning
in  exclusive competition,  defeating/putting down others,
etc.

     The  kind  of self esteem which people seek  plays  a
major  role  in whether or not they come to enjoy  healthy
self esteem.

     The  dilemmas of  self  esteem  become   particularly
difficult  when  they relates to sexuality  because  often
grounds   for  self  esteem  pertain  to   achieving   and
maintaining control, perfection, objectivity, rationality.
None  of these point to realities which are  unambiguously
helpful in developing sexual integrity.  Thus the commonly
respected  grounds  for  sexual self esteem  often  entail
ideals  and values which undermine personal integrity  and
communal  integrity.   More  appropriate  categories   and
criteria  are  needed  to  serve as ways  of  pointing  to
healthy  grounds  for  sexual self esteem.  They  are  not
likely  to entail control,  perfection,  objectivity,   or
