Any expectation of communal conformity tends to reduce the freedom to be reflexively honest, and so tends to weaken the roots of both personal and communal integrity. Both personal and communal security are rooted in the gift of freedom to be vulnerable in intimately honest dialogue. Such freedom cannot be achieved through defensive efforts on the part of insecure people or communities; for defensive efforts deprive others of the freedom to be vulnerable in intimately honest dialogue with those whom they least trust. Achievements tend to be rooted in technologies. Technologies are designed to achieve preconceived goals. Personal and communal security are gifts, not achievements. Technologies are not the keys to personal and communal security because personal and communal security cannot be achieved: they are received as gifts from people who are secure enough to give such gifts to others who are threatening because they do not feel secure. Security is not an objective reality; it is a reflexive reality. When people do not feel secure they are not secure, and they are likely to be on the defensive; regardless of the objective status that they may enjoy. People with powerful defensive technologies do not feel secure and are not secure, no matter how costly, powerful, sophisticated, and potentially destructive their defensive technologies may be. Their opponents are bound to be made to feel insecure and defensive. Defensive technologies tend to deprive people of the freedom to be open and honest in reflexive dialogue. People who specialize in defensive technologies operate primarily in objective/analytic paradigms within which reflexive honesty is taboo. To become able to enjoy security technocrats need to be honest with themselves about the limited powers of their technologies. Technocrats and their codependent supporters need to become aware of the security which they can learn to enjoy by taking small risks of trusting people in honest relationships rather, than taking the large risks entailed in systemic patterns of manipulative dishonesty. Dishonesty as a manipulative technology undermines the personal and communal integrity which the technology is ostensibly supposed to defend. The destruction of the integrity of a community in the name of saving the community (as in the Vietnam War) is a sign of the disintegration of those who engage in such destructive behavior. The use of dishonesty in the name of protecting the integrity of a community, is a sign of the disintegration of those who pretend to be protecting the personal and communal integrity of the members of the community.
