To pretend is to act "as if" in a misleading and dishonest way. To so pretend leads to personal and communal disintegration. It is dishonest to pretend that: You desire what you do not desire; or do not desire what you do desire. You do enjoy what you do not enjoy; or do not enjoy what you do enjoy. You do know what you do not know; or do not know what you in fact do know. You do believe what you do not honestly believe and trust in; or do not believe what you really do believe and trust. You do not fear that which you really do fear; or that you do fear that which you do not fear. You do trust people whom you really do not trust; or that you do not trust people whom you really do trust. You are not familiar with someone with whom you are familiar and intimate; or that you are familiar and intimate with someone with whom you are not familiar and intimate. You can control something/someone that/whom you can not control; or that you are not trying to control something/someone that/whom you are trying to control. You have powers which you do not have; or that you do not have powers which you do have. That important things are unimportant; or that unimportant things are of great importance. That limited resources are without limit; or that resources which are not limited are in scarce supply. That fantasies which cannot be realized can be realized; or that fantasies which can be realized cannot be realized. Most dishonesty does not reside in overt lying; it resides in pretending in ways which are misleading, and which lead to personal and communal disintegration. The community which encourages these subtle/hidden forms of dishonesty thereby undermines its own integrity, its own unity, and sows the seeds of its own disintegration. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
