Good people are then the people who have the power to achieve conformity to good standards. Evil people are then the people who lack the power to achieve conformity to good standards. It is rarely clear who are the people who have the power to define what are good standards, or how those standards are set. Clarity about the motivations and actualities of exercising control is not promoted by powerful people, because such clarity would unmask the games of mutual self deception which are important to such people. To them the appearance of having the power to be in control is essential to self esteem. Clarity about what power they have, and do not have, would unmask them and threaten their self esteem. They do not have the power which they need to feel that they have. Too careful an examination of what powers they do and do not have, and any examination of their motivations for needing to feel that they have powers that they do not have---would be destructive of their fragile self esteem. In fear they exercise power to inhibit honesty about their fears that they have inadequate power to meet their own psychological needs to have more power. In covert ways they exercise collusive power to set disintegrative standards to which powerless people must conform, or feel guilty. Guilt is a tool used by some people to manipulate other people, to coerce conformity to disintegrative values and ideals; values and ideals which lead to the disintegration of personal and communal integrity. Using power to coerce people to conform leads to disintegration. People who feel the need to use power to force good conformity are people who are insecure because they do not enjoy personal and communal integrity. The vicious feed- back loops of disintegration leads people to try to be good through the discovery and impositions of good kinds of conformity. People's failures to succeed in the exercise of such power occasion intensified feelings of need to exercise such power to be good. They want to be in control through the knowledge of good and evil---so that they will be conditionally respected and loved by God, so they can then be proud of themselves. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
