Selfishness is a form of self preservation in an isolated competition to survive as an individual, rather than survive as a species. The selfish person is attempting to achieve an impossible goal: the isolated personal achievement of individual eternal significance and/or satisfaction, or something much like that. That which the selfish person seeks can be enjoyed only within an integrated community. To avoid the disintegration of selfishness we need to seek to promote both personal and communal integrity. Promoting compulsive objectivity does not promote the integration of our understandings of our selves with our understandings of our "objective" environments. To be compulsively objective is to disintegrate some connections between us and others as objects. Compulsive objectivity is not the way to avoid the bias of selfishness. Selfishness is related to self-centeredness. To the selfish person all priorities are centered on the self and self's welfare seen in a limited way, seen in a self- centered way. Questions of values, ideals, priorities are judged in terms of self's desires, fears, concerns, etc. The selfish person does not live according to any transcendent ideals, but rather self-centeredly.
