One theory of consciousness insists that consciousness be focused only upon sensory perceptions of the behaviors of others, not upon a sympathetic understanding of the consciousness of others. How can people who believe in this theory have a mutual sympathetic understanding of each other's consciousness of the theory? Some people believe that the only ultimate realities are unconscious, and that humans can be conscious of them in objective ways which are free from presumptive biases. Such people tend not to be in dialogue with others about differences in their presuppositions, because such dialogue might help them become conscious of other realities about which they have been ignorant. They prefer to be unconscious, as objects are, of their presuppositions about consciousness; and prefer to be unconscious of each others' consciousness, and each other's presuppositions about consciousness. In this they are somewhat like objects which they admire for their unconscious simplicity of inter-relationships. People who are committed to an objective theory of consciousness are not behaving objectively. Commitments are not objective actions. An objective theory of consciousness is not an objective reality, its reality depends upon the participation as believers the theory has no reality, no power to affect objective processes, nor power to affect human consciousness. Any theory of consciousness which merits respect will have integrity and promote both personal and corporate integrity. It certainly will not contradict itself or undermine self-consciousness or communal-consciousness. A theory which disintegrates that which is the focus of its attention does not merit respect!
